Sherry Waters + Kira Rudjen
Project type
Fiber art, pastels, paintings
Date
April + May 2025
Sherry Waters was an artist from a young age. Growing up in Wichita, KS, her mother put her in art lessons for something to keep her busy with during long summers. She didn't think of art as a career until she found ceramics at Ft. Hays State University, and then everything changed. Sherry spent her life teaching art for USD 259 as well as being an adjunct for WSU and other schools around Kansas. She has worked in many mediums, and came to fibers in her style because she didn't get along with weaving.
She treats fibers like paint, fusing layers of color together, stitching with invisible thread, and then using her sewing machine to “draw” in final details.
The show is a variety of pieces in different media. Having been an artist for so many years, Sherry has made art in a myriad of ways. Her fiber tree series takes up the main space, which is an interesting art form that shouldn't be missed! She also has acrylic paintings, fused glass, ink wash on ceramic tiles, a quilt, and more.
To purchase Sherry's work, there is a sign in each location with her contact information as well as her Venmo account through which you can pay her directly. Her work will be up through the end of May.
Kira Rudjen's pastel work is on display one final time before she moves out of the state. Her own words on her current show is as follows: This show is a loving meditation on the places I have traveled, lived, and seen. As an artist with ADHD, there are many moments where I feel captivated by a view and I become unable to move my focus anywhere else until I've almost obsessively saved it for later - photographing a single moment 20 or 30 times at least. By bringing those memories onto paper I am reminding myself that these places existed, that I was there, that I loved it, and that it matters. Often the speed of life and thought creates an irreverence that I struggle with - being able to appreciate the beauty of the things I find important is a way I consciously slow down, and spend time with myself and my thoughts. I wanted to include a self portrait to punctuate that self reflection.
This is one of your final opportunities to see Kira's work in downtown. Kira will also have a final reception and goodbye party at Switch Wicked Studios on May 17th.
